What Should I Do If I Have a Dental Emergency While Traveling?
Vacations, road trips, and weekend getaways are meant to be fun and relaxing—but a dental emergency can quickly change that. Whether you’re across the country or just a few hours from home, knowing what to do can make all the difference. At Martin Dentistry, we want you to feel confident and prepared, even when you’re far from your regular dentist.
Common Dental Emergencies While Traveling
Here are a few dental emergencies that can happen when you’re away from home:
- A chipped or broken tooth
- Toothache or sudden sensitivity
- Lost crown, filling, or veneer
- Swollen or bleeding gums
- Knocked-out tooth
- Jaw pain or swelling
Stay Calm and Act Quickly
First things first—don’t panic. Dental issues can feel scary, especially in unfamiliar places, but many problems can be managed until you get professional help.
What You Can Do Right Away
- Toothache – Rinse your mouth with warm water and use dental floss to remove any trapped food. Avoid very hot or cold drinks, and take over-the-counter pain relievers if needed.
- Chipped or Broken Tooth – Save any pieces if you can. Rinse your mouth gently, and cover any sharp edges with dental wax (available at most drugstores) to protect your cheeks or tongue.
- Lost Filling or Crown – Temporary dental cement or even sugar-free gum can be used to cover the exposed area. Avoid chewing on that side and call a local dentist as soon as possible.
- Knocked-Out Tooth – Handle the tooth by the crown, not the root. Gently rinse it (no scrubbing), and try to place it back in the socket. If that’s not possible, store it in milk or saline and get emergency dental care right away—timing is critical!
Find a Local Dentist
If you’re traveling in the U.S., you can search online for emergency dental care near you or contact a local dental society for help. Many cities have urgent dental clinics or same-day appointments available.
If you're a patient of Martin Dentistry, give us a call. Even if you're out of town, our team may be able to recommend a trusted provider or guide you on the next steps.
Prevention Tips for Future Trips
- Visit us for a dental checkup before your trip
- Pack a small dental emergency kit (wax, pain reliever, floss, and temporary filling material)
- Avoid chewing ice or very hard foods while traveling
- Know your dental insurance coverage and what it includes when traveling
