What Are the Signs of Gum Disease I Should Watch For?

Gum disease—also known as periodontal disease—is one of the most common oral health conditions, yet many people don’t realize they have it until it has already progressed. At Martin Dentistry, we believe that early detection is the key to protecting your smile, preventing tooth loss, and maintaining long-term oral health.
Understanding the early symptoms can help you get treatment quickly and avoid more serious complications. Here are the top signs of gum disease you should never ignore.
1. Red, Swollen, or Tender Gums
Healthy gums should look firm and pink. If your gums appear red, puffy, or feel sore to the touch, this may be the earliest sign of gingivitis, the first stage of gum disease. Inflammation occurs when plaque bacteria irritate the gum tissue.
2. Bleeding When Brushing or Flossing
Do your gums bleed during brushing or flossing? Although many people assume this is normal, it is one of the most common early indicators of gum disease. Healthy gums shouldn’t bleed easily. If they do, it’s time for an evaluation.
3. Persistent Bad Breath
Chronic bad breath—also called halitosis—can be caused by bacteria trapped beneath the gumline. If brushing, flossing, and mouthwash don’t help, gum disease may be the reason.
4. Gum Recession or Teeth Appearing “Longer”
As gum disease progresses, the gum tissue begins to recede. This can make your teeth appear longer than before. Gum recession exposes tooth roots, leading to tooth sensitivity and increased risk for decay.
5. Tooth Sensitivity
If your teeth are sensitive to hot, cold, or sweets, it may be due to exposed roots caused by gum recession. Sensitivity is often a warning sign that gum disease has moved beyond the early stages.
6. Loose, Shifting, or Separating Teeth
Advanced periodontal disease weakens the bone that supports your teeth. This can cause teeth to loosen, shift, or develop gaps that weren’t there before. This stage requires immediate dental treatment to prevent tooth loss.
7. Pus or Infection Around the Gums
Any sign of pus, warmth, or infection around your gums is a sign of an active periodontal infection. This is a severe stage of gum disease and needs urgent dental care.
8. Changes in Your Bite
If your teeth suddenly don’t fit together the way they used to, gum disease may be affecting the supporting structures around your teeth. Some patients notice changes when chewing or speaking.
Why Early Detection Matters
When caught early, gum disease is highly treatable—often with improved home care and professional cleanings. When ignored, however, it can lead to:
- Bone loss
- Tooth loss
- Gum recession
- Increased risk of systemic conditions like heart disease and diabetes
